FROZEN ROSES, ICED LEAVES and HOAR FROSTED FLOWERS
Pictured in Reno Nevada - 2000 to 2010. Photographer: Christine
Snow, Ice and Roses
Some of the most fleeting and beautiful moments in the rose garden come
in fall when the roses are lush and perfect. Unbidden, unwanted, a
sneaky, rotten, miserable cold front makes an unwelcome visit. After
the storm system passes, there are typically three weeks more of mild
weather but once encased in snow and ice, the roses are irreparably
damaged - bruised and shrunken - with months to wait before healthy
blooms return to this Nevada garden.
There is nothing to be done but to get out with the camera before the
sun melts the snow, while the blooms sit encased in ice - perfect and
colorful, and doomed. The photos on this page are the sad swan song of
a garden when fall turns briefly to winter.
